Rare Metals

Selenium

Selenium is classified as a semimetal, which is an element between metals and nonmetals. It conducts electricity when exposed to light or ultraviolet rays. Due to this property, it is used in light-related equipment such as copiers and solar cells.
In glass manufacturing, it is used for red coloring. Adding selenium to stainless steel also makes it easier to process.
Selenium shares similar properties with sulfur and is obtained as a byproduct during the smelting process of copper ore. Consequently, China, with its thriving copper production, is the primary producer. It is also produced in Japan.
The element symbol Se derives from the Greek word selene (Moon). On the periodic table, selenium is directly above tellurium (Te), whose name comes from the Latin tellus (Earth).
