Tungsten has the highest melting point (approximately 3,400°C) of any metal. It is an extremely hard and heavy metal.
Leveraging its properties of high resistance to high temperatures, high pressure, and wear, tungsten is used in various fields such as cutting tools, light bulb filaments, aircraft engine parts, and medical equipment.
Furthermore, tungsten carbide, a compound with carbon, boasts hardness second only to diamond. It is used as a super-hard alloy for industrial drills.
Tungsten is mined as an associated mineral in ores such as copper and tin. It was once mined in Japan.
Major producing countries include China, Russia, and Canada. China is the largest supplier, accounting for approximately 80% of global production.
The element symbol W originates from the German word wolfram.
