Rare Metals

Cadmium

Cadmium is a soft metal that spreads thinly when hammered. It is used in metal alloys and as a material in various industrial products such as nickel-cadmium batteries (NiCd batteries).
However, it is also the substance responsible for itai-itai disease (cadmium poisoning) and is a toxic metal to humans. Due to its high toxicity, its use is governed by strict legal regulations.
Cadmium is typically produced alongside zinc and recovered as a byproduct during the smelting process used to extract zinc.
